FRISCO – For the Dallas Cowboys to have a deep playoff run in 2021, there must be some key contributors bolstering the defense. One of the top X factors is Randy Gregory, who is needed as a difference maker in the pass rush department.

Gregory has routinely struggled to stay out of trouble with the league office due to substance abuse policy violations. That has not been the case this season as he is a full go for training camp and week 1 of the season.

Speaking at Wednesday’s opening press conference at Cowboys training camp, Jerry Jones said he was “really impressed” with how Gregory has endured his “life challenges.”

“I’m really impressed with the way he stayed on track with legitimate life challenges,” Jones said. “I see him use the logic and mindset of what he’s been through and bring it to his game and become the professional he can be. He has a lot of profile on his tires.”

Gregory put on a very productive 2021 campaign despite the limited opportunities he was given. In 10 appearances, he registered 21 tackles, 3.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and 12 quarterback hits.

Last season, there was a major argument that Gregory deserved far more shots than he received. Staying out of trouble could very well come in what is expected to be a “big year” for the pass-rusher.

“He’s a great teammate. He would be in the top five percent if he didn’t have any problems.” [in the locker room]. As a person, he has always been worth the extra time investment. It’s what lies ahead that excites me the most,” Jones said. “We’ve never questioned his talent. I’m looking forward to having a really big year.”

New defensive coordinator Dan Quinn recently said he has big plans for Gregory and was “surprised” he didn’t play last season.

As long as Randy Gregory can keep the off-the-field element in check, the 2021 campaign could lead to realizing the potential that many saw him achieve when he entered the NFL.
