A question among many gymnastics fans was how good? Jordan Chiles would do in the qualifiers: would she advance to the all-round or event finals, or would she be disqualified due to the two-per-country rule of gymnastics?
It was not her afternoon. Chiles, 20, scored just 12,866 on the bars and ended the day with two falls on beam, one on an acrobatic run and another on her dismount. That left her among the top two Americans at any event.
Still, she will almost certainly take home a medal in the team finals, where the United States will aim for a much stronger show.
A month ago, Chiles was the third all-rounder at the Olympic trials, behind Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee. She is generally a well-rounded and consistent gymnast, and she was the only American team member not to make major mistakes in one of the four major domestic competitions this year. That means she’s done 24 routines and beat them all.
