Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday Riverdale Season 5B premiere.
The good news: Riverdale‘s Jughead is not in an alien spaceship bound for another planet. The bad news: He is in a truck on the way to God knows where.
Wednesday’s Season 5B premiere ended with a tottering Jughead deciding to head back to New York City to confront his demons after a sobering stay in a homeless camp. He got into the cab of a strange truck driver… which, as we know, has been the downfall of several Riverdale residents so far. In addition, Archie and Veronica agreed not to stir things up again while she is still married to Chad, Betty and Tabitha bonded by tripping together after Jughead’s ex Jessica gave them psychedelic mushrooms, and Cheryl found religion and had a vision of her. dead brother Jason after her mother Penelope started a new (and possibly scam) church in Thorn Hill.
After all that chaos, TVLine turned to Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa for answers. Read on for the latest on Archie and Veronica’s relationship, a possible reunion for Betty and Jughead… and Cheryl’s fragile mental state.
TVLINE | We saw Jughead hitchhike at the end of the episode and get into that truck, which we know is bad news. Does this mean we’re going to overlap his mission and Betty’s mission?
We will one hundred percent. The great mystery of Jughead is unpacking what happened to him during those seven years in New York that led to him leaving that crazy message. But he does get involved in Betty’s mystery and Polly’s mystery. By the end of the season, I’d say he and Betty are teaming up to bring Polly home.
TV LINE | It seems Archie and Veronica are getting closer and closer to a reconciliation. Are they, and is Chad currently out of the picture?
Chad is still very much in the picture. Unfortunately, we have much more to do with Chad. [Laughs] I will say that in [the premiere], that conversation in which Archie and Veronica decide not to get back together and not start a relationship right away until they get their house in order is a very fateful decision that will resonate greatly for the rest of the season. I love that scene towards the end of [the premiere], with Archie and Veronica at the restaurant, because they love each other so clearly and want to be together so clearly, and KJ [Apa] and Camic [Mendes] have such great chemistry. It makes you long for that reunion and pray for it.
TV LINE | Speaking of reunions, I have to ask if there’s any chance we’ll see Betty and Jughead recover.
I think Betty and Jughead have a lot more distance, a gap that needs to be bridged, than Archie and Veronica. All I’m saying is I think they should rebuild their friendship first, and they should unwrap that voicemail, which is so dark, and Cole [Sprouse] so passionately committed. I think they have a bit of a journey and need to sort their own stuff out. I’ll say that I think it’s in episode 16 Cole and Lili [Reinhart] have this beautiful scene that’s almost like a one-act, and it’s just those two talking about what their life was like without each other, and it’s so beautiful. It begins to open the door between the two.
TVLINE | So Cheryl sees visions of Jason again, and her mother starts this church. Is she going down another strange family road here?
I’ll say this is going to be a big story for Cheryl, and yes, it seems to start out as a crazy Blossom plot or grift. But for Cheryl, it’s getting real, and she’s fulfilled in a way she hasn’t felt since Jason. And I will say that we continue to cross even that threshold, and it leads to a very surprising place for Cheryl towards the end of the season. It redefines who that character is in an exciting way.
